One of the most influential moments in comic book history was when all the famous superheroes came together in the pages of one issue to fight a common enemy.
"The Justice League of America" is one of the earliest examples of a group of superheroes saving the world and it was done with a lot of style. A good comparison would be "Ocean's 11," in terms of star power. That film had all the heavy hitters of Hollywood in one film and it was almost too much to bear. The Justice League similarly had the most famous heroes (from DC comics) of the time together in one comic book.
Over the years the team has changed, disbanded, reunited, disappeared and even died. But no matter how many changes, the team always existed to take on threats that were far too big for one hero alone.
For years, fans have been clamoring for a Justice League film. While the project has been in development hell over at Warner Bros. for a long time, it looks as though it may still be a while before the film ever gets made.
It is likely that Warner Bros. will set up individual films for all the heroes before they could ever cross-pollinate the characters. So while Batman has successfully been brought to the silver screen, the studio will bring out films with the likes of Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman, and probably a reboot of Superman before the all-star team could take on a feature film together.
The movie is also a logistical nightmare for directing and casting. It is by no means an easy task for Studios to convince actors to commit to multiple films playing the same character. The problem of choosing a director also arises, because there are already so many different individuals helming the individual films. Provided that Warner Bros. could get past all that housekeeping, a "Justice League" film has all the makings to be a superhero epic.
In additon, there may not be a director in the world that would be able to handle a film of this scale but - as of now - there may only be one man for the job. That man is Zack Snyder, director of "300" and "Watchmen."
Whatever anyone wants to say about "Watchmen," they have to recognize his ability to produce visually stunning movies. These films also show he has a penchant for the epic and grandiose. Snyder's obsession with comic books aside, he has proven that he can make a comic book story like "300" be emotionally intense and just cool.
After the director, the movie will need a cast to bring these legends to life. I've cast Superman and Batman in previous installments of Casting Call but just to refresh your memories they would be portrayed by Tom Welling and Christian Bale respectively. Those guys have simply earned their roles living and breathing the characters on television and film.
Green Lantern/ Hal Jordan
Eric Bana
While his first superhero outing as the Hulk did not work out as well as he had hoped (or any of us had hoped for that matter), Bana has proven his acting chops in films like "Troy," "Munich," and "The Other Boleyn Girl."
The role of Hal Jordan can best be described as a cowboy of sorts. Jordan was a man with no fear and the intergalactic ring had chosen him over all the individuals on Earth to be the new Green Lantern and protector of Earth and his sector of the galaxy. He is not always the smartest or most calculated like Batman or Wonder Woman, but he is portrayed as strong willed and sometimes cavalier. Bana has portrayed many, if not all, of those traits and would bring just what the character needs to be realized on screen.
Runners Up: Nathan Fillion ("Serenity")
Wonder Woman/ Diana Prince
Kate Beckinsale
Wonder Woman, the Amazonian warrior and most famous female comic book character, has yet to be portrayed on film. When they do bring her into this movie, she needs to have stature, presence, stubbornness, sexiness, and leadership skills. Kate Beckinsale exemplified the woman who kicks butt in the "Underworld" series and has shown her maturity in films like "The Aviator." Beckinsale also has more screen presence than many of the actresses out there today, making her the ideal candidate to step into Wonder Woman's boots.
Runner Up: Angelina Jolie ("Wanted")
The Flash/ Wally West
Ryan Reynolds
The Fastest Man Alive also happens to be one of the most sarcastic smart mouthed superheroes out there after Spider-man. Reynolds has an affinity for funny rambling and action. In "Blade: Trinity" he showcased his ability to tackle action and stunts in films as opposed to just comedy. West was always someone who was a bit intimidated by the rest of the league, feeling as if he was the youngest and most unworthy sometimes. But in the end he has saved the league on more than one occasion. In "Definitely, Maybe" Reynolds displayed that conflicted behavior that needs to be dramatically brought to The Flash.
Runner Up: Topher Grace ("Spider-man 3")
Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen
Brad Pitt
Too much star power here? Maybe, but Pitt can adequately portray Oliver Queen's cynicism and gritty attitude towards life. Similar to The Flash, he is a bit sarcastic but focusing more on political jokes and the establishment. He is also pretty rough around the edges, so he ends up butting heads with some people who do not really end up sharing his views. Regardless, he remains a good leader and one of the heroes always looking after the little guy. Pitt's resume is filled to the brim with a variety of roles each showing the qualities necessary to portray Queen. Some of those movies include "Fight Club," "12 Monkeys," and "Troy."
Runners up: Sean Bean ("The Hitcher"), Justin Hartley ("Smallville")
Aquaman/ Arthur Curry
Gerard Butler
Aquaman is the stubborn and prestigious King of Atlantis and protector of the sea. He is definitely the proudest and most headstrong member of the league often clashing with Green Arrow. Gerard Butler's portrayal of Leonidas in "300" gives a good indication of what his version of Arthur Curry would be like. Aquaman has to be extremely arrogant, but very kind when it comes to his Kingdom and the sea. Butler would be able to encompass all of these attributes with relative ease, since the role is essentially tailored to his talents of playing a tough king.
Runners up: Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen") Daniel Craig ("Casino Royale")
