The holiday season has arrived here in Storrs for all to see. As finals approach and stress increases, it's the perfect time to take a break from it all to see a Christmas classic playing at the Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts. "The Nutcracker Ballet" will be performed Dec. 13 at 1 and 4 p.m. The event is a co-production between the Jorgensen Center and the Connecticut Ballet.

The Connecticut Ballet, led by artistic director Brett Raphael, is celebrating the anniversary of its 28th winter season.

For those who think themselves completely averse to ballet, the Nutcracker is no ordinary ballet; it is an exciting Christmas story told through dance. "The Nutcracker" was originally composed by Russian composer Pyutr Illyich Tchaikovsky in 1892.

The fairy-tale nature and classic story have made it both timeless and traditional, as well as capable of inspiring numerous adaptations in the holiday season. Many may not know the names, but most of the music in "The Nutcracker" is easily recognizable "Christmas music" that is heard in movies, TV shows and on the radio this time of year. The ballet includes "The Nutcracker Suite," which is probably one of the most recognizable pieces of music to emerge from this production. The dancing the accompanies it is simply incredible.

This sure-to-be amazing production is the perfect answer to that stressful weekend before finals. Take a friend, or even invite your family up for the show. "The Nutcracker" should put you in the holiday spirit. Going to a ballet at the Jorgensen could be a much needed change of pace for this semester and a wonderful time for all. "The Nutcracker" should be filled with holiday cheer, beautiful decorations, music and dancing, so take some time out this weekend and get into the season at the Jorgensen with this Christmas classic.
