Despite the frigid weather, hundreds of students turned out for the 25th annual One-Ton Sundae Friday morning. The event, which occurred as part of the Student Union Board of Governor's Winter Weekend Celebration, featured 75 three-gallon tubs of UConn Dairy Bar ice cream piled more than five feet high on the patio outside the Student Union. UConn students paid $1 each to receive a 64-ounce bucket donated by SUBOG that they could use to fill with as much ice cream as they desired. According to signs, the only rule students were mandated to follow was to wear gloves while scooping the ice cream. Toppings were also available and included M&Ms, cherries, nuts, hot fudge, caramel and whipped cream.
According to SUBOG advisor Josh Brandfon, the One-Ton Sundae event is held annually, no matter the weather.
"Although it's always the same weekend each year, the weather has really varied. It's generally fairly cold, but we've had years where it's been warm and sunny out already. At the same time, we had one year where there was actually a blizzard going on. It didn't matter too much though, we still held the event and, believe it or not, the students still came out for ice cream," Brandfon said.
Students were willing to brave the cold yet again this year, as more than 300 students stood lined up outside the Student Union, waiting for their turn to get a few scoops of ice cream.
Despite winds that nearly caused the tent sheltering the ice cream to collapse, students made light of the situation.
"Well, at least now I won't have to worry about all the ice cream melting while I wait," said Keri Klink, an 8th-semester biology major.
Although it was Klink's first time at the One-Ton Sundae event, there were also many returning customers present.
According to Matt Heaphy, the SUBOG Concert Chair and an 8th-semester actuarial science major, "The One-Ton Sundae events are always a blast. Every year they seem to get better."
Heaphy, who says he has attended the event every year he has been at UConn, also added, "this is one of SUBOG's most fun events. It's actually pretty expensive since SUBOG pretty much ends up paying for all the ice cream and containers and what not, but it's well worth it since people seem to enjoy it so much."
The members of SUBOG who helped to set up the event also added that, in addition to the One-Ton Sundae, there would be various other events held on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate Winter Weekend. These included a performance by the Dropkick Murphys and also the Snow Ball, UConn's first semi-formal dance.
