It's up to students to decide who will be crowned the next UConn Idol.

In the tradition of the hit television show, "American Idol," the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG) will be hosting its annual competition to see who has the "it-factor" and will be crowned this year's UConn Idol.

The event will take place Monday, Feb. 26 in the Student Union Theater. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event is free for everyone.

"We are going to follow the 'American Idol' format as much as possible in the form of a one round competition," said Adonis Chamble, a 6th-semester communication major and SUBOG's fine and performing arts chairperson.

With only one song, the contestants will have to give it their all to impress the judges.

Chamble said that after their performance, contestants will receive feedback from judges, Brandon J. Roberts, a music teacher and Berklee College graduate, Sarah Thompson, a musical theater veteran and a capella recording artist with Jamin Toast and Robert Rosado, an accomplished competition singer.

Earlier this month, contestants were chosen by Chamble, Carlton Jones, a 6th-semester sociology major and SUBOG's comedy chairperson, Darcey Kane, an 8th-semester marketing major and SUBOG vice president of programming, and Janene Richardson auditioned the 'Idol' wannabees. Chamble said that about 45 people turned out for the auditions, but no word yet on how many will be competing.

The prizes for first, second and third place will be announced at the show, said Chamble.

Last year's winner, Carleisha Canty, currently a 4th-semester journalism and English major, received a $100 gift certificate to the Buckland Hills Mall, a plaque recognizing her as UConn Idol 2006 and six hours of studio recording time at the Onyx Soundlab in Manchester.
