It's tempting to write an entire column on Michael Phelps' recent media encounter involving marijuana.

But in the week since the photos were released, this incident has gotten more media attention then necessary.

Before I dive into this week's column, I will note how respectable it is that he's genuinely concerned about upsetting mom.

"It's obviously bad judgment and it's something I'm not proud of at all," Phelps told The Baltimore Sun. "I will say that with the mistakes that I've made in my life, I've learned from them, ... That's what I plan to do from here. It's definitely not what I wanted, and it's clearly not what my mom wanted."

Aw.

Okay, discussion over and moving on. This week we're going to focus on some celebrity couple updates. Hollywood romances change by the minute, after all.

Claire Danes and British boyfriend Hugh Dancy were engaged last week. According to Us Magazine, the couple have been inseparable since meeting on the set of the 2007 film, Evening.

Danes, perhaps most famous for bringing Angela Chase to life in the 1994 television drama series "My So-Called Life," recently wrapped up "Me and Orson Welles" with co-star Zac Efron.

"Fast and Furious" 35-year-old Paul Walker, is rumored to have popped the question to his 19-year-old girlfriend Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell over the winter holidays. However, the E! Network Web site says that some sources are calling the betrothal false.

"Engaged or not," according to Eonline. "After a little math, we might call the whole thing something else entirely."

"They'll take their time to do things the way they like," said an insider to Star Magazine.

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere was seen getting comfortable with singer Jesse McCartney at The Crown Bar in West Hollywood.

Radaronline reports that the couple was seen canoodling at the popular bar, despite Panettiere's relationship with long-time squeeze Milo Ventimiglia.

"She was holding him tighter than Michael Phelps gripping that bong," according to the Web site. "The Heroes star was sitting on Jesse's lap while he kissed her neck. Then she got up and did some crazy sexy dance in his lap."

I don't know about the "crazy sexy dance," but what I do know is that McCartney, 21, told singersroom.com that "being single makes for good songwriting." I guess this is something to write about.
