'Love Drunk' a catchy, lyrical mess

"Love Drunk" is the second outing of pop-punk band Boys Like Girls. Their first, self-titled album was a runaway success on the charts in 2006, and "Love Drunk" seems to be headed in the same direction. While it doesn't do much (if anything) different from its predecessor, Boys Like Girls certainly know the type of music they're making, and they make it very well.

If Boys Like Girls are especially good at one thing, it's coming up with a truly catchy song. Eight of the 11 tracks will have your resident pop-punk lover dancing their pop-punk shoes off to the powerful snares, clear vocals and catchy choruses. Every song also has its own hook that gives each of these eight songs a little originality.

Unfortunately, to be extremely kind to "Love Drunk," originality is not one of its strong suits. Thematically, Love Drunk is about as diverse as you and your reflection. Literally, 10 of the 11 songs are based around love or the lack thereof, and the eleventh is debatable. I don't know what I was expecting from a group called Boys Like Girls writing an album called Love Drunk, but c'mon guys. There really isn't that much variation in song choice, either. It's pretty much down to pop-rock head-bobber or harmonious pop-rock slow song. While all of the songs are plenty of fun to listen to, there are very few standouts on album. Notable exceptions are the last two songs on the album, with "Chemicals Collide," injecting the tired pop-punk formula with some much needed zest and "Go," which comes across as a sincere, melodic ballad.

Lyrically, this album is a mess. Let's not get into it. It suffices to say that I could probably pull more creative lyrics out of a half-missing set of magnetic poetry.

However, if you're considering this album, you probably aren't expecting a wide range of themes or lyrical originality and genius. This record sets out to be a head-bobbing good time for fans of pop-punk and twelve-year-olds alike, and accomplishes that goal in spades. Prepare to be hearing these songs on the radio and lodged in your brain for weeks to come.
