With sounds more common in science fiction movies than rock albums, Muse's "The Resistance" is nothing short of out of this world. The fifth album release from the band, "The Resistance" features a combination of heavy rock, intergalactic sounds and Broadway-esque theatrics, and most importantly a mark of growth with its introduction of more pop-based sound.
Opening with "The Uprising," Muse immediately brings energy, with heavy guitar distortion and wailing, alien-like synth. This song is an exceptionally strong start to the album, and prior fans will find it similar to many of the hits (think "Time is Running Out") the group is known for. Detracting from this track, however, is the addition of a clap-track and group 'oy' style shouting.
With a few electronic dance songs on the album, "Undisclosed Desires" and "I Belong to You" feature a more '80s pop sound; a definite change from the heavier sounds of the past. While both relatively good tracks, fans of former albums may find these songs disappointing.
As every group needs one good power ballad, "Guiding Light" slows things down a bit with guitar reminiscent of the hair metal era and echoing cymbals. However, the lyrics of this song are seriously lacking, as "You are my guiding light" is repeated over and over and other lyrics are essentially just a rephrasing of this same line.
The last three tracks on the album, "Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1, 2 and 3" are entirely different than the rest with an epic, theatrical sound and vocals that channel Freddie Mercury. These tracks, while a little bizarre, show the true musical ability of the group, incorporating piano, strings and electronic elements.
While this album does not showcase the extreme rock of previous releases or even the weight of former albums like "Origin of Symmetry," this is at the very least an interesting album that fans will not be disappointed with.
