When you hear the words, "Kama Sutra," most likely you think of crazy sex positions. The Kama Sutra is actually an ancient Indian text written by Mallanaga Vatsyayana, and it is thought to be the philosophy of love, not just sex positions. So what does this ancient Indian text have to say about sex that everyone finds so interesting? Well, the Kama Sutra is comprised of several parts - an introduction, a section on sexual union as well as a section on the acquisition of a wife, about a wife, about the wives of other people, about other courtesans, and about attracting others to one's self. Kama Sutra is not just a guide on how to have amazing sex, but a way to have a complete love with a wife. Although Kama Sutra may seem pretty outdated, I have found some interesting things that I feel are important to everyone when you talk about love. The Introduction:

It is apparent that Vatsyanyana really knew his stuff within the text of the introduction. The introduction says that, "M A N, the period of whose life is one hundred years, should practice Dharma, Artha and Kama at different times and in such a manner that they may harmonize together and not clash in any way." Now, this may sound pretty similar to a recent philosophy lecture, but a deeper look reveals that dharma means obedience to command, artha is the acquisition of art, cattle and land, and kama is the art of love. Vatsyanyana claims that these three things must be accomplished in life in order to be fulfilled.

The rest of the introduction goes on to talk about how important it is to create a well-balanced life, comprised with the arts, singing and dancing, tattooing, writing, drawing, magic and cooking. Then follows a section on how to live the life of a wealthy man, and it suggests holding lots of gatherings, picnics and parties. The last section discusses the caste system and how it relates to women.

Sexual Union

This chapter contains most of the concepts individuals think about when reading about Kama Sutra. This section discusses different ways to lay with a woman in order to best compliment both partners. It also expresses the importance of so called foreplay, or touching, rubbing, piercing, and pressing and then goes into describing types of kissing. When you kiss with your eyes closed, according to the text, as deemed normal in our society, it is called a touching kiss. While discussing all of these types of foreplay, a certain amount of respect is enforced, the text reads that, "in the affairs of love a man should do such things as are agreeable to the women." When it comes to sex, the Kama Sutra does know all, the rest of this section is dedicated to naming and explaining different ways of laying, what the positions are called and the type of lover you must be in order to accomplish these positions.

The Kama Sutra brings respect to sex by making it an art, calling it so and also making it so by explaining it as a craft. Yes, it does point out different positions, but it does so with such carefulness that allows the reader to understand that you need to have respect for your partner in order to try these positions.

The Final Sections

I found it very interesting to find that there were four sections dedicated to acquiring a wife. In this culture is seems of the utmost importance that a man and a woman are happy together, and the Kama Sutra provides many ways of making sure you and your lover are compatible. I think that something our society doesn't respect is that it is important to have a strong emotional connection in order to have great sex.
