Many people practice routines or habits after sex that may be perplexing to their mates. It's time to move past the embarrassment and misunderstandings and clear up the misconceptions about why people do the things they do after sex.
Shower
The answer to why your partner runs off to the shower after sex is obvious. Most people don't like feeling sweaty, dirty or generally unclean.
MSNBC contributor Brian Alexander spilled the awkward (but straightforward) truth in response to a reader's concern that she may be at fault for her husband's compulsive showering.
"I don't really want to have to paint a picture for you, but [showering] makes our lives a little simpler later," Alexander said in the article for MSNBC's online health section.
You need not be embarrassed or take it personally. Guys, your woman could feel uncomfortable from your sweat, too. Any vigorous activity will make you sweat. Would you want to snuggle after a trip to the gym?
Falling Asleep
Sex can be exhausting; no doubt, but there is a biological answer to why men need some recovery time between romps.
Melinda Wenner, from NYU-based scienceline.org, writes that during orgasm, the male brain releases a "cocktail of brain chemicals," which includes a hormone called prolactin that has a sedating effect.
However, men aren't the only ones who get a little sleepy after sex.
Ben Barrett, a 6th-semester communications major, said he and his partner have found a solution.
"She always falls asleep afterward, so we try and do it more in the afternoon," Barrett said.
Bathroom Break
Guys, does your partner run out of the room after sex? Chances are, she's headed to the restroom-one of the most important things a woman can do after intercourse. There are two main reasons why.
First of all, women have the unfortunate predicament of possessing a whole lot of plumbing in a very tight space. An article by the Well-Women staff at Barnard College said that direct pressure on the bladder gives women a very strong urge to urinate during and after sex.
In addition, the close proximity of the bladder, urethra, vaginal opening and rectum means bacteria is easily spread throughout these narrow tubes. According to familydoctor.org, "the urethra is shorter in women than in men, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel."
This Web site also said flushing out the infection-causing bacteria (heading to the restroom), is key to keeping your body healthy and avoiding potentially dangerous infections.
Next time yourself partner ducks out of from under the covers, she's probably not running away. Chances are she's saving herself a ton of trouble by using the ladies' room ASAP.
Taking a moment for you after sex isn't a bad thing. Give each other some space and a little private time if necessary. Don't be offended if your partner isn't ready to cuddle right away. If you are uncomfortable with what your mate does, talk about it. Understanding and accepting these needs and habits makes for a much healthier sex life.
