Students from all over campus crowded into the Student Union Friday evening to take part in SUBOG's first UConn Late Night of the semester. Activities were spread throughout the Student Union building, featuring attractions such as bingo, photo T-shirts, a game show and various arts and crafts, which encouraged students to bring their creations back to their dorm rooms. Students could be seen throughout the Student Union carrying personalized signs and colorful miniature aquariums with them as they enjoyed the festivities. The event surely accomplished its goal of engaging students with its "Welcome Back" theme. The event was especially successful in making freshmen comfortable in their new collegiate surroundings.

"It makes you feel welcome and makes me really want to come to more SUBOG events" said Nephthalee Edmond, a 1st-semester pharmacy major.

In addition to creating a fun alternative to normal off-campus weekend activities, a chief goal of UConn Late Night is to make students feel at ease in the relatively new Student Union building.

"Late Night is an opportunity to showcase the Student Union," said Josh Brandfon, a graduate assistant in the program office. "It's a fun, safe opportunity for a Friday night. The biggest thing is that people have a good time."

A surprising hit at UConn Late Night was the "Dance Dance Revolution" video game machine set up near the information desk. Throughout the night, the popular dancing game generated huge crowds and even helped cement friendships. Activities such as this and the other very diverse UConn Late Night attractions are important parts in making UConn students feel like they are truly a part of a community.

"It gives students an opportunity to meet people who like the same things," said Carolina Aguila, a 5th-semester ecology and evolutionary biology major.

The next UConn Late Night is scheduled for Sept. 16, where the theme will be "Sports Night." All UConn Late Nights are free-of-charge and take place from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.
