The first months of college can be difficult. Students need to be able to adapt to the vast, new environment that is UConn.

Though the transition into a new school might be complex, your college wardrobe should be simple. First lesson? In order to be stylish and sophisticated, bring the essentials.

Jeans

Though sweatpants might feel nice to wear to that 8 a.m. class, you should make sure to have at least four pairs of well-fitting jeans.

Let's face it, laundry days will be few and far between during your college career, so sturdy denim will not only be kind to your behind but will also require fewer washes than other pants. At least two pairs should be dark wash, which will pair nicely with a dressy top when needed.

Dress shirts and pants

A white button-down shirt is an essential piece of a college student's wardrobe. You might not need to look professional often, but having one killer dress shirt lying around is a smart move.

When deciding on a dress shirt, fit is key. For the ladies, a flattering shirt with cuffs that end right at the wrist is best. As for pants, a dark gray or black wide leg trouser is best, but the hem shouldn't fall past the ankle-don't sweep the ground with such nice threads.

Shoes

This one is a biggie. The first kicks that come to mind are sneakers and flip-flops. A good pair or two of sneakers or tennis shoes are needed for the gym, but flip-flops should only be worn when it's warm out. Don't be one of those students wearing flip-flops in the snow!

Shower shoes are also essential because heaven knows what you are stepping into when you shower in your dorm bathroom. But since room space is limited, keep the shoe pile to a minimum. Depending on your taste, a few flats, pumps and sandals - or a nice pair of dress shoes - will suffice. Make sure to bring a pair that complements the professional outfit as well. And don't forget some sturdy, waterproof boots for the wintertime!

Outerwear

Though we all will hope for a warm start to school, the cold days are inevitable. Keep a hoodie for the cool days, and a heavier coat for the frigid ones. As with dress shirts, a jacket should be well-fitted since the cut of a jacket can make a look. Wool peacoats, in particular, exude a sense of style and class but will also keep you warm.

PJs

A quality set of pajamas is essential for hanging out with your new set of dorm friends. You'll probably be exploring your floor into the wee hours of the morning, and even in your nightclothes you should show a sense of style and modesty.
