Placing third behind Maine and Massachusetts in the UMass Invitational this past Saturday, the Huskies forced their way into the mix and made their presence known with a total of 66 points. In a 58-man field, two huskies finished in the top five. Winning the race with a time of 25 minutes, 22 seconds was Will Sanders, followed by a fourth-place finish by Scott Johnson with a time of 25:46.
"Going into this meet, our goal was to place top three", said assistant coach Rich Miller. "We expected our top runner Will Sanders to place first. He controlled and dominated the race and was unchallenged. Scott Johnson also ran a great race and showed big improvements."
"I would have liked to have run a better time, but time was not the goal of the race, it was to get out, be competitive, and win," said Will Sanders. "The biggest threat to my race was myself. I took it out a little bit too hard and felt it in the second half of the race. But these early races are about getting back into a groove. I can't get away with that later on in the season so it's good to get that out of my system as soon as possible."
Coach Miller knew the tough competition that his team would face, but also knew what his team was capable of and the results reflect that.
Looking ahead to meet number three on the season, Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon will join the team hoping to work out the kinks in their first meet at the Connecticut College XC Invitational in Waterford Connecticut.
