It's been more than a month since the school year started. Names like Donald Brown, O'Brian White and Lindsey Leck dominate the headlines. Now, it's time to take a look at some athletes on campus who are showing what they are made of on offense in their first year.
Annie Luhrsen, volleyball, setter - She may be the youngest player on the team, but Luhrsen is not lacking when it comes to talent. She may even be the best freshman player of any sport this fall. In fact, she leads the Huskies in service aces this year and ranks fifth overall for assists in the conference. is no wonder she was named Big East Freshman of the Week three times and was on the weekly honor roll two additional weeks.
Tony Casio, men's soccer, midfielder - Casio has started the last two games for the Huskies, the only freshman to do so, playing alongside Dori Arad and White. He has also appeared in each of the team's games this season at midfield and has provided help on offense, including an assist in the Huskies game against St. Peter's in the season opener.
Karen Gurnon, women's soccer, midfielder - Gurnon is the only freshman to play in all 11 games of the season for the Huskies. Thus far, she has five shots and an assist to her name. Before coming to UConn, she scored 33 goals in her senior year. Though it is her first year, she may become an integral part of the offense in the coming years.
Ali Blankmeyer, field hockey, forward - As of late, Blankmeyer is one of three freshmen - the only one on offense - to start for head coach Nancy Stevens, most recently against No. 11 Louisville. In the team's game against then- No. 16 Michigan, she tallied her first goal of the season and put the Huskies on the board.
