An interesting thing happened after Saturday's sellout of Rentschler Field. Unable to go to the game, I sat in the comfort of my palace and watched the Huskies fall to a Boston College football team that was just flat-out better. It was frustrating to watch UConn get handed chance after chance after chance and then just turn around and waste them. After the game had been decided, I hiked to the north side of campus for dinner with a buddy of mine, both of us in sour moods. Sitting amongst 60 to 75 somber, quiet UConn students with faces painted and 'Dog Pound' student-section shirts on, we discussed went wrong. And then the unthinkable happened. Two girls walked in wearing yellow shirts and someone glanced over and noticed that they weren't any ordinary yellow shirts, but mustard-yellow, Boston College 'Superfans' shirts. The same mustard yellow that sparks hatred in anyone who detests Boston College. The same mustard yellow that could be seen on TV in the makeshift Boston College student section at Rentschler Field. Needless to say, the patrons of the dining hall - including my buddy and I - lost their minds. Throngs of "BC sucks" chants rained down upon these two girls as if Troy Bell was suited up at Gampel. Quickly, they ducked into the serving area, where they were met by more boos and jeers by the UConn faithful. So what does this mean? If nothing else, it means that the foundations of a football rivalry is being built here, well, at least in East Hartford. Sure, Calhoun's boys will always have a game that means something against the Eagles, but there is nothing like a good football rivalry - something that UConn has never been able to boast. We're not talking anything like Oklahoma-Texas, or Notre Dame-Miami just yet, but games against Buffalo used to be bragging rights for who wouldn't be the worst team in the Division I-A. Now that head coach Randy Edsall is putting together a more solid product on the football field with every passing Saturday afternoon, it is only a matter of time before UConn not only catches Boston College, but competes with the Eagles for the title of "Best Football Team in New England." That day may not be too far away. Sure, the Huskies don't have the opportunities like the Eagles do (Boston College still has games against Notre Dame, Miami and Pittsburgh - three top-25 opponents who the Huskies don't have on the schedule this year), but everyone has to start somewhere. With dedicated fans and a fast-improving program, the day when Boston College and their Hell-bound fans/students are the second-best team in New England doesn't seem to be too far away. Are you headed to Hell? Or at least a BC student who disagrees with me? Then let me know about it - Mike16taz@hotmail.com.
