UConn heads to Philly for Big East match

The UConn volleyball team was set to face Fairfield on Wednesday to square off in its last non-conference game of the regular season but the game has been rescheduled for Oct. 21 due to unforeseen circumstances. Mother Nature apparently didn't get the memo that the Stags and Huskies were supposed to battle.

Next on tap for UConn (11-10, 4-2 Big East) is a streaking Villanova squad, coming off of two consecutive victories.  In a week dominated by their Homecoming at the main campus, the Huskies have kept their sights set on the road as they continue Big East play at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse in Philadelphia on Saturday against the Villanova Wildcats. Villanova (14-6, 3-3 Big East) completed a sweep of Rutgers and Seton Hall last weekend without losing a set, as the Wildcats dominated their fellow Big East opponents at home.

Disappointed from its 3-1 loss to Syracuse last Sunday, UConn wanted to avenge its loss with a win over Fairfield before heading to Villanona.  But the Huskies have a few extra days of practice in preparation for their Big East tilt with the Wildcats.

"We are doing well in Big East conference play," said head coach Holly Strauss-O'Brien. "We just have to continue to improve daily and execute game plans."

The Huskies and Wildcats have played only two of the same opponents this season with both teams shutting out DePaul and losing to Notre Dame. Villanova, led by senior outside hitter, Elyssa Studzinski, will look to get above the .500 mark in Big East play with a win over UConn.

"We are in a good place, I truly believe that," Strauss-O'Brien said, "And as I have said before, our best volleyball is still ahead of us."

The UConn volleyball team will the have four days to prepare for Fairfield after their bout with Villanova before resuming Big East action in Queens, N.Y. against the St. John's Red Storm.
