This is day three of five of our countdown of UConn's top fantasy sports performers. For Kevin Duffy's scoring system, please see page 11.
15. Mike Pezza, junior, men's soccer
Fantasy Points: 62 (1 goal, 9 assists)
"Pezza, who led the nation in assists last year, picked up where he left off, finishing second in the Big East in assists with nine. Pezza also finished with a goal of his own in the team's season opener against St. Peter's. Pezza's season earned him a spot on the All Big East honorable mention team." -Men's soccer beat writer Kevin Vellturo
Pezza on his high school roommate at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J.: "Me and [NBA player] J.R. Smith lived together at St. Benedict's. Many of the students that went to St. Benedict's were from the city of Newark or cities close to it. For the students that lived far like J.R. and I, we lived at a dorm at the school with 50 other kids that lived far and did not want to commute. J.R. lives in Lakewood, N.J., the town over from me. So, on our down time, many of the kids who lived at the 'Leahy House' [the last name of the headmaster of the school, Father Edwin Leahy], we played basketball in the HAB gym. J.R. was a real cool kid, funny as hell. I try to keep in touch with J.R.; I text him from time to time to see how he is and he replies, but he has a pretty busy schedule. I talk to his brother Chris a lot, we're real good friends. Overall, going to high school with him and being around him was fun. He went right to the NBA from high school, and everyone knew that's what he was going to do because he just destroyed kids on the court."
14. Lawrence Wilson, sophomore, football
Fantasy Points: 62 (64 tackles, one sack, three interceptions, one fumble recovery, one touchdown)
"Wilson often goes unnoticed, but after being named a Freshman All-American last season, he came back even stronger in 2008. If it were not for his late pick-six versus Louisville that gave the Huskies a 26-21 win in the Big East opener, this team would be 6-5 on the outside looking in at a bowl game."- Football beat writer Kevin Duffy
13. Chauntay Mickens, senior, volleyball
Fantasy Points: 63 (334 kills, 52 digs, 37 blocks)
"The senior was solid at the beginning of the year, but then elevated her game and propelled the Huskies to the upper echelon of the Big East. Mickens was the most dangerous offensive threat for UConn averaging 3.07 kills per set. She eclipsed the 20-kill barrier in four matches in the 2008 season." -Volleyball beat writer Mike Barnhart
Mickens, looking back on her career: "I actually have a fifth year of eligibility that I will most likely take, but the thing that I will miss the most is the team. Many of the girls have become my second family; they are definitely my sisters. We may disagree at times, but we will always be there for one another. They have helped me through many hard times and I hope they can say the same for me. There is a special bond that comes from being on a team. You are with these people every single day and it will be weird not seeing them."
Pump-up music before a match: "Anything techno, I am usually a big fan of rap, but before games what really gets me pumped is hardcore techno, and our team has the best techno mix that we've created for pre-game. Me, Kate [Seabaugh] and Devon [Farrell] seriously have a ridiculous techno routine we do before matches. It's hilarious and it's actually posted on our Facebooks."
12. O'Brian White, senior, men's soccer
Fantasy Points: 68 (6 goals, two assists, four game-winners)
"After the best offensive season in school history in 2007, White had a hard act to follow and did not have quite the same season in 2008. Despite being injured for the last 5 games, White still led the team in goals with six and points with 14. Of the six goals that White scored, four proved to be game winners. White also earned this third consecutive first team All-Big East selection." -Men's soccer beat writer Kevin Vellturo
11. Jessica Isaac, junior, volleyball
Fantasy Points: 70 (460 digs, 55 assists)
"Isaac was a consistent performer for the Huskies all year long. The junior averaged 3.94 digs per set from her libero position which was good enough for sixth in the Big East. Isaac led the team in digs in every match except one and became a team leader. Look for her to take her game to even greater heights in her senior season." -Barnhart
Isaac on the growth of UConn volleyball: "Since my freshman year I think the program has grown in such a way that the players are more dedicated and we believe that we can achieve success. We've been progressively more successful each year, but I still think we can take another big step in postseason and make NCAA's."
What she'd be doing if she weren't playing volleyball: "I quit soccer to be a volleyball player and sometimes I wish I had stuck with it. I love playing. But I also love watching the soccer teams here, and I recorded like every game of the World Cup in 2006."
