The UConn men's tennis team will play in Hamden for the fourth time in five days when it continues its fall season today against the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The matchup with Quinnipiac is the first in nearly three weeks for the 3-0 Huskies, and the first of the season for the Bobcats. UConn has participated in three tournaments during that time span, among them the Quinnipiac Invitational this past weekend where they were joined by five other schools.
Freshman Wei Lin and sophomore Matt Burns combined to take home the Flight B doubles. Lin and Burns defeated pairs from Hofstra and Fairfield 8-5 and 8-5, respectively, to advance to the semifinals. The UConn duo then faced pairs from Quinnipiac in their next two matches, starting Charlie Feldman and Dillon Kraus who they defeated by a score of 8-3. In the finals, Lin and Burns knocked off Alex Lazerowich and Chris Nelson, also from Quinnipiac, to take home the flight title.
Senior Tom Cook and sophomore Ricardo Cardona also competed in B doubles, but the pair was knocked out by eventual runner-ups Lazerowich and Nelson. In the same flight, UConn sophomore Nic Visinski teamed up with a player from Sacred Heart, but the duo lost its first round matchup.
In A doubles, Quinnipiac's Brian Mikkelson and James Kwei knocked off two pairs from UConn during their run to the flight championship. Sophomores Dave Adams and Jai Yoon defeated pairs from Quinnipiac, Hofstra, and Sacred Heart to set up their showdown with the aforementioned Mikkelson and Kwei. Adams and Yoon fell short in the finals, losing by a final tally of 6-8. Senior Joe Goldstein and junior Andrew Marcus dropped their matchup with the Quinnipiac duo in the first round by a score of 5-8.
Cook, who was coming off his performance at the Bucknell Invitational where he won titles in both singles and doubles, advanced all the way to the semifinals in B singles this past weekend. The senior defeated St. Peter's College's Jay Gramatica and Sacred Heart's Nick Mazzarese in straight sets in the first two rounds of his flight's tournament. After taking the first set 6-2 against Fairfield's Erik Kremheller, Cook dropped the second set 5-7 and was finished off in the tiebreaker 7-10. Adams competed with Cook in Flight B singles. The sophomore won his first matchup against St. Peter's College's Tony Wilkey 6-3, 6-3, before losing to Kwei in straight sets.
Lin won his first two matches in Flight C, beating Lazerowich 6-4, 6-3 and Sacred Heart's Jinal Shah 6-3, 1-6, 10-4. He then lost to Fairfield's Aaron Chan in the semifinals. In Flight D, Burns and Visinski both lost their respective quarterfinal matches.
Sophomore Scott Warden, who has primarily competed in Flights A and B this season in singles and doubles play, did not compete in this weekend's invitational.
After the match against Quinnipiac, UConn returns to action Thursday for the ITA Northeast Regional championships. The tournament will run throughout the weekend.
