UConn Police set up DUI checkpoints around campus Friday, to crack down on alcohol offenses as well as other motor vehicle violations.
Police made one DUI arrest and one arrest for alcohol offenses. They stopped 400 to 500 vehicles while they were set up from 10:15 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. according to Major Ronald Blicher of the UConn Police Department.
"We considered it a success," Blicher said. He said that it was a visible event that sent a clear message to drivers.
Blicher said that police will conduct more checkpoints like this one. Police will also send out their mobile DUI patrols, which are police cars specifically patrolling for DUI offenders.
UConn Police will announce when they will have specific checkpoints, according to Blicher. The police department had not yet established a date for the next checkpoint.
However, the police always have general patrols looking out for DUI offenses.
Blicher declined to comment on any connection between the rise in DUI enforcement and the hit-and-run that killed UConn student Carlee Wines last January.
"We are not going to tolerate DUI offenses," Blicher said.
