President Ryan McHardy addressed members of USG with a State Of The Campus address at the last meeting of the semester.
McHardy discussed his overwhelming sense of accomplishment for what the Senate has achieved throughout the fall semester, as well as some of the goals he hopes to instate and work for in the near future.
Collaborating with university President Michael Hogan was a refreshing and encouraging experience that USG is very appreciative of, McHardy said. McHardy urged Hogan to consider the interests of the students first, and to work with USG to safeguard those interests. USG and Hogan collaborated on events such as the safety walk and he attended various meetings and activities throughout the semester, according to McHardy.
"USG, as an organization, has completed one of its most transformative semesters in the organization's history," McHardy said. "We have completely overhauled the structure of our internal office operations, developed more comprehensive training, and now sit the largest active senate in our history," he said.
Notable achievements have come from committee chairs, the funding board and external affairs committee. External affairs worked to host the Connecticut Conference of Student Government Associations for the first time ever.
"This is a huge milestone, as UConn has the opportunity to lead the charge in unifying students across the state," McHardy said.
McHardy addressed the goals he has for the upcoming semester and the future of USG. He hopes to see more involvement and communication from the students, and more cooperation between student groups on campus.
"I look back at the goals that the vice president and I came into office with, and am amazed at how when something seems to zoom by so quickly, so much can still be accomplished," McHardy said, referring to the fall semester. "However, the sense of satisfaction is fleeting compared to realizing even more needs to be done that we had not thought about."
McHardy stressed the formation of two important committees with student representation. They include a committee on Spring Weekend and a committee on the Student Recreation Facility. These two areas of the university are very prominent with student activity and are important to the overall student experience, he said.
"I ask that USG and the students join me in never settling for anything short of incredible," McHardy said. "This is our university and it is our responsibility to hold this standard."
The Senate also approved the spring funding session amounts, funding board guidelines and financial budget.
In total, 27 clubs on campus will be allotted $94,593.87 next semester.
