After earning a draw in a tough battle Tuesday night against Washington, No. 3 UConn men’s soccer team (2-0-1) will look to continue their undefeated season this Saturday when they host Bradley University at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at 7 p.m.
The match will mark the first meeting between UConn and Bradley. The Braves finished last season with a 10-6-4 record and tied for third place in the Missouri Valley Conference. The team is coming into the match with a 2-2-0 record on the season after suffering two losses last weekend during the UNLV Nike Invitational at the hands of the hosting Rebels and UC Riverside.
Bradley’s roster will feature senior goalkeeper Brian Billings, who was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season for posting two shutouts in the teams’ victories, and senior forward Alon Badat, who has scored three goals so far this season.
The Huskies’ defense, however, has been the story of the season so far, as the team has yet to concede a goal in three matches. Coach Ray Reid said he is pleased with the offense and has credited junior goalkeeper Andre Blake for his efforts.
“This guy is the best goalkeeper, and we’ve had some really good goalkeepers,” said Reid. “You’re not going to see much better than this guy.”
Blake has played every minute of every match so far this season and posted a shutout each time out, giving him a career total of 30.
As for the offense, the Huskies have scored only two goals this season, but Reid has said he is “not at all” worried about it.
“It’s always the last thing to come along,” said Reid. “It’s just a matter of time. We have to get back to moving the ball a little better and Mama (Diouf) more involved in the offense.”
