Every year on Family Weekend, UConn brings an entertainment act to Jorgensen Theatre to give students and families something extra to do on Saturday night. In the past few years these shows have featured comedians, but this year the show will highlight an a cappella talent.
Pentatonix, the winner of NBC’s “The Sing Off” season three, will be performing two shows at Jorgensen on Saturday night. The first show begins at 7 p.m. and the second at 9:30 p.m. The group met shortly before appearing on the NBC show and is comprises of five members: Scott Hoying, Kristie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. Pentatonix performs arrangements of popular songs without the accompaniment of any instruments besides their mouths.
Pentatonix is currently known for their renditions and adaptations of songs such as “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye, “We Are Young” by Fun and “Gangnam Style” by Psy. Collectively, Pentatonix’s versions of these three songs have received over 17 million views on YouTube. The group also released their first album in June of this year, titled “PTX Volume 1,” which features both covers of other artists’ songs and some original songs.
However, before Pentatonix takes the stage, an a cappella competition will be held for college and high school student groups on Friday night. Pentatonix, this year’s family weekend performer, will be judging the competition and the winning group will then perform as the opening act for both of Pentatonix’s shows on Saturday night. The competition is free and available to public and will take place at Jorgensen at 7:30 p.m.
