The Daily Campus

General Information

The Daily Campus is the largest daily college newspaper in the state of Connecticut. The Daily Campus employs 150 students during the academic year. We publish Monday through Friday during the academic year and deliver 10,000 copies to over 80 locations both on and off campus and to select locations at the Greater Hartford regional campus.

In 1896, the S.A.C. Lookout was created at the Storrs Agricultural College in Storrs, Connecticut. The College, with a senior class of about a dozen students, had just opened up its first female dormitory and two young newspaper pioneers, John H. Evans and John N. Fitts, started what we know today as The Daily Campus.

The staff was small, unpaid and included the captain of the football team as its Sports Editor. It was published once a month and cost 50 cents a year to subscribe. When the college newspaper's founders laid out their four-page issues, it was by hand — selecting tiny metal slugs with embossed letters from a printer’s California job case.

Today, The Daily Campus is a nationally recognized, color, two-section broadsheet newspaper. We use top-of-the-line technology to print and deliver the news to our readers, but still maintain the basic mission of our past: to emphasize coverage of local and campus news, sports and entertainment.

The Daily Campus has been publishing for 112 years and recently celebrated its 53rd year of continuous daily publication. In the 1970s, the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees granted what was then called The Connecticut Daily Campus its independence from the Associate Student Government and created the newspaper it is today.
