Letters to the Editor: Ramadan speaker and students respond to accusations of insensitivity

Abstract:
I was honored to give a talk on "Misconceptions about Islam" at the Muslim Student Association's Ramadan Awareness Dinner and Fast-a-Thon at UConn. Many professors and students expressed to me their appreciation for both the topics covered in my lecture and my manner of delivery....

If Islamic law is so sympathetic to rape victims, why do I recall reading that a rape victim in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to receive 200 lashes and 6 months in jail for being alone with a male who was not her relative when she was raped? I believe that happened in 2007, just last year. I'll take the United States with the separation of church and state any day!

Jane, you lack serious insight in this specific case.
From dozens of rape crimes in Muslim countries, this specific case was heavily covered in the US media. In all other cases that you didn't hear about, the rapist is punished and the victim identity is protected to help the victim recover sychologically. The case you refered to is unique, since the victim simultaneously confessed to a past crime, namely having an earlier affair with one of the rapists. The judges chose to punish her for her past crime to deter other girls from falling into this same trap. You may disagree with his decision, but I don't think that I should expect a judge to forgive a past crime that I confessed to because I have been the victim of another crime.

I think you should read about the real cause of rapes in this country and others. It is not sexually as you make believe, it is a violent crime that has more to do with domination and control. Many elderly women have been raped, some in their late 70's and 80's, proving that it does not take someone to be "scantitly" dressed to provoke such attacks.
I agree that most American girls and women could dress much more modestly, but not to avoid rape, but to not make men have to give into temptation to look and stare, leading to thoughts that contaminate their minds.
We are all human and will always sin, that is why I am so glad that my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ died on the cross, to take my sins away. There is n enough good works that I could possibly do to enter heaven. I must ask God for forgiveness and try my best to not sin again.
Rape is not caused by women dressing modest or not!

I wonder why all the negative comments are based on assumptions rather on something that was actually said.
No one said that rape is "caused" by women dressing modestly or not.
There are many causes for rape and this wasn't a topic in Cleaver's speech.

So please pay attention to what's being said and stop making assumptions.

"To a man who is criminally violent, depraved and desperate, can seeing many scantily dressed women be the straw that broke the camel's back? Meaning, is it within the realm of possibility that watching women in very revealing modes of dress could realistically spark and stir an already criminal mind to assault a woman?"

I guess I am confused. What is the difference between being the cause of rape and the "spark" of rape? Perhaps you can explain it to me.

Worship God, the Creator, alone and worship none but him. Ask Him forgiveness, for He is Forgiving. Repent to Him with sincerely for He accepts sincere repentance. Fear Him, for His punishment is so harsh and painful.

Unfortunately, some Christians today take their faith in God as a way to get rid of their feeling of guilt. Satan has turned their faith into a justification for leading a sinful life and giving up repentance.

Go back to the teachings of Prophet Jesus and the prophets before him. Before the Christ was sent and after he ascended to God, God is one and the same.
