Faculty lots should open to students for late classes

Abstract:
When the weather gets colder, students are more likely to begin trying to find ways to avoid walking to class. Especially with sunset coming earlier and earlier, the temptation builds to hop in the car, instead of trudging all the way across campus in the dark....

I think this is a valid point, though it would be hard to implement - you'd have to change signage across campus, which of course would cost money and given today's lead story, I don't see money being invested in something as trivial as adjusting parking lot regulations at this point in time. (But I could be wrong...) Hey doesn't USG have some extra money in its budget now that that whole blackberry thing seems to be a wash? ;) I think it's important to remember as a reporter to report accurately however, and the line "considering the parking shortage on campus..." is just plain wrong/misleading. Go swing up to C-lot or W-lot or the Horsebarn Hill Arena lot at any point during the day and you'll see there is plenty of parking to be had. It of course requires planning and either physically activity or use of the campus bus system which doesn't mesh well with today's go-go-go mindset... But it comes down to whether you'd rather attend college in a concrete jungle or a beautiful New England landscape. If you want the pavement and parking lots next to every building, you should have chosen a city school not one founded on management and preservation of the environment.

Isn't that what buses are for?

I'm basically in agreement that lots could open at 4pm (they used to be only about 3-4 years ago), however, who is teaching those late classes? Don't faculty need to find a place to park also??

4 or 4:30 might be decent compromise, but not any earlier. I had a twenty minute walk for a 5 PM class last semester, and a lot of times I had to risk getting ticketed between when I parked and 5 PM (usually 10 minutes or so, but still a possibility). 4:45 seems fair, since the 3:30-4:45 crowd could get in their cars and leave and the 5 PM crowd could get parked and walk to class.

I just graduated in May, but I remember most of the Area 2 faculty lots opening up at 4. I used to always park in Lot 9 right in front of X lot and never had a problem. Yea the Area 1 lots were 'til 5, but at least the Area 2 lots are something. (Unless they moved everything 'til 5 this year...)

I had also heard that many of the core Area 1 lots were changed from 4 to 5 due to traffic jams and accidents involving students trying to get in to park before going to a 4 pm class, so I don't know how feasible it would be to change it back.
