What Happens If The RIAA Targets You

Abstract:
Editor's Note: The name of the student featured in this story has been changed to "Dave" to protect his identity.

When Dave went back to his room after dinner to check his e-mail Jan. 9, he almost deleted the two spam-like messages.

"The title was like, 'Fwd: Fwd, some weird numbers, from the university," he recalled....

I would fight the RIAA!! To me, as long as your not selling the music, file sharing should be legal. Limewire or other peer-to-peer sources are no different then a library. Does a library charge a fee everytime a book is checked out, and pay the publisher a fee? Of course not!! The same should apply to music downloads. UConn has a very fine law school. I would take up the legal ramifications with them.

UConn should tell the RIAA to pound sand and STAND UP FOR THEIR STUDENTS.

Other Universities have refused to tell the RIAA the names of students they accuse of filesharing.

The RIAA is extorting UConn students and UConn is helping. Of course "Dave" is going to pay the $3,000 because he doesn't have the additional money it would take to fight the case in court, on the merits. The RIAA knows this, which is why they offer the "pre-settlement."

In other words "pre-settle with us, without us having to prove anything, or we will use our power and $$$ to cripple you financially."

There are numerous cases where the RIAA has sued the wrong people. Their case isn't air tight.

Shame on you UConn.

UConn isn't ratting students out. They are refusing to give names, and are only acting as intermediaries when the RIAA finds out.

Obviously you dont read any P2P news or recent events of the past year or so. Taking the RIAA to court has only worked in a couple of cases, with the defendents being older single mothers being represented by the EFF at no charge, and they come out lucky. Only possible argument is that you didnt download them, it was friends who came in, or someone piggybacked on your wifi. But even those have a seriously small chance of working.

Do a little reading, and it doesnt get much better optimistically speaking. Bottom line, dont use Limewire first of all. If you must P2P this way, use Ares or KCeasy, and move files after downloading. Pay for UseNet, and download WAY faster without having to upload, even BT privates with tor work well.

Go to your student council, get them active, and then have them go up the chain to the University President.

If a University is publicly known to rat out their students and not protect them, it doesn't bode too well for their ability to win-over prestigious new students, faculty, etc. It's a big public image nightmare...

We're actually a startup that's trying to fix the whole P2P issue, and we're partially funded by the University of Florida -- an institution trying to take an active approach as opposed to sitting on their ass and pretending nothing is happening.

Every student at UCONN should get a router & leave it open/unencrypted.
This way, there is no way of knowing who, out of the whole student body, downloaded what from whom! What is the RIAA gonna do then sue 25,000 students????

That looks like lots of fun. When I was in college we didn't had so many fun activities.
