What Lies Beneath Mirror Lake?

Abstract:
Mirror Lake, the somewhat optimistically named body of water across from Arjona and Monteith, has been a fixture of campus life practically since the university's inception.

Once used for ice skating and as host to an annual rope pull, today the lake serves as a reflecting pool for an elegant stand of birch and evergreen trees, and a scientific test-bed for students and faculty....

From what I remember, there's probably more than sediment in Mirror Lake. I suspect that the lake's bottom is full of garbage, including broken glass and old cans. I think there should be some kind of sample dredge, or an exploratory tap, to see exactly what's down there, even if it's only two feet down. Mirror Lake can use a cleaning, and not just for algae and biological heebie-jeebies.

The lake is deeper than 2 feet. Three years ago, the Uconn Sailing Team sailed two Laser class sailboats on the lake. While some parts are only ankle deep, we were able to sail with the daggerboards completely down for the most part. The water was so salty, though, that it formed much more noticeable salt lines on your clothes than even the ocean. This was in the spring, and was probably worse than normal due to runoff.
