Miles away from Storrs

Abstract:
Nate Miles allegedly made some poor decisions and he has been expelled from UConn as a result. And rightly so.

The university, not to mention its basketball program, (or its head coach), has been given a black eye. People have begun to question whether the program is becoming decadent, accepting players of questionable character....

Greetings from the Windy City

Thanks for a very well written and balanced article. From my experience

UConn Basketball has run the gamut from the John Crisp scandals in the

late 60's to the unfortunate Nate Miles episode. The only good thing to

come out of this was Nate hopefully getting his hand slapped early and

seeing the handwriting on the wall to get it together. My only criticism

it seems comes from the excuses offered by his guardian in not admonishing

him severely enough of the immediate consequences. Jim Calhoun is about

the most open-minded of coaches, but dont bite the hand of a guy who goes

way out of his way to give you a great big head start in life. I have heard

nothing but accolades on the volunteer and charitable efforts made by Caron

Butler and his mother in Wisconsin. With that said the Bulls only wish

they had another Ben Gordon in their backcourt. Ben has demonstrated a

true sense of community pride here in Chicago and it goes without saying

former UConn alumni here wish both the Basketball and Football Teams

all the best even though we are 900 miles from Storrs.

I do agree with you Kevin that college students drink, always have an always will. However I reject the idea of comparing the UConn Basketball players to regular students in a dorm. They are on full rides. I believe students receiving that much support and money from the University should be held to a higher standard. As you said yourself, because of their exploits the University now has a "black eye". I do not begrudge the basketball team its fame, but they have been the face of UConn for a while. You never really hear anything about pharmacy, education, physical therapy, or engineering students, who are in programs at UConn that are held rather high and tough programs. So in short, if what most of the world sees about our school is our basketball team and they are receiving much more from UConn than the average student, I would like them to be the best model students UConn can find.
