Budget cuts hurt club sports

Abstract:
Shards of glass, sharp rocks and odd smells - what sound like the makings for a horrific science experiment are the conditions the UConn women's rugby team faces each time they take the field at Depot Campus after university-wide budget cuts.

UConn's Club Sports Council, following the trend of many other organizations on campus, has had its budget substantially cut, passing the effects on to the many teams it oversees....

I too have been heavily affected by the cut in club sports budget. However, I do not appreciate an article in the paper bitching about how you should be able to stay in hotels and not have to stay at team members homes, jerseys etc. You also complain about the luxuries of Women's NCAA D1 #1 ranked team in the country? Are you serious? Do you realize how this makes you look?

My point is this, yes you should have been fundraising the whole time and not simply taken the budget for granted to rely on handouts from the university. It hurts Club Sports for you to write something that sounds so unappreciative and once privileged. Some other club sports teams have always fund raised, cut corners, slept 10 to a room etc to make ends meet. It is unfortunate that anyone in a position to give funding back to Club Sports may have read this article. I hope all teams can take this as a lesson to go out and get used to fund raising like it is at so many other schools in the hope that the school can one day give us some more money to travel and reach that higher level competition.

Dear author, next time please write a better sob story if you want people to feel sorry for your subject.

Thanks for your input but you missed a few key points here. My name is Russell Blair, I am a male, therefore I am not on the women's rugby team and I don't compete in any club sports. I took it upon myself to find something a bit more interesting than the normal sports stories of uconn women's basketball blowing teams out or the football team underperforming. I approached a club affected by the budget cut, interviewed some of their players and wrote a piece addressing the issue. The underlying issue I believe here is the renovation of the Depot Campus field as that is used by many clubs and just the women's rugby team. If I somehow offended you then by all means, take it up not with me but the people featured in the article. I just thought this was a pertinent issue that deserved some coverage in the paper to make students aware of the far-reaching implications of the university budget cuts.
