Contraceptive Costs Climb

Abstract:
UConn students are suddenly facing sharp increases in the price of hormonal contraceptives, according to Student Health Services (SHS).

The increase is a result of the federal Deficit Reduction Act, which has cut financial incentives that are given to drug companies who offer discounted contracts for birth control to non-profit organizations and universities....

I can't believe this is really cost-saving. Unless they seriously believe that in the absence of less expensive contraceptives, people will just abstain from sexual activity. Seems like more unwanted babies could raise costs and/or produce more mommies, who can't complete college and have to settle for poorer-paying jobs (=less taxes collected down the line).

This act is all the more reason why Planned Parenthood of Connecticut's federal and state funding should be stopped. PPC's primary source of income is their sale of contaceptives. PPC sold 10.5 mil in 2005. That's over one half of the 20 mil sold in this state. None of these hormonal pills and devices prevent a woman from ovulating 100% of the time. One of the ways these hormonal contaceptives work is by hardening the mucus lining of the uterus wall therefore making implantation of the newly conceived human embryo imposible causing a chemical abortion 15% of the time. That is why they're known as chemical killers. And what about the breast cancer link to the pill?
PPC harms women and children and our taxpayer money should not be going to fund the most blood thirsty business on the face of the earth.

A CHEMICAL ABORTION? Okay in order for a chemical abortion to take place, a pregnancy is needed first! This is faulty information - Birth Control (hormonal, oral contraceptives) are highly efficient in PREVENTING pregnancy. There are 3 forces at work in order to achieve this. ! The prevention of Ovulation (no egg = no baby!), The thicken of cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach the uterus or an egg on the off chance that ovulation does occur (which would happen only due to human error in taking their contraceptive), and creating an inhospitable environment in the uterus , stopping implantation of an egg. I respect the opinions of others, especially if this stance has a religious backing but If information is given on such an important topic, it needs to be the truth! Birth Control does not cause abortions - it prevents pregnancy. One last thought is that there is much more to Planned Parent Hoods all over the world that distribution of birth control (which is often given free of charge, or at an extremely affordable rate!, or abortions, Prenatal care, and care after the pregnancy for mother, child, father and siblings for one. Planned Parent hood is an established and competent organization for which funding should NOT be cut - If anything it should be increased!!!!!!

In order for an *abortion* to take place, something has to be aborted--this may be a zygote (fertilized egg, NOT the same as the mother's gamete, or egg), an embryo, or a fetus.
One of the ways that oral, hormonal birthcontrol works is by preventing the implantation of a zygote in the uterine wall. Some people now define "pregnancy" as the time when the zygote becomes implanted in the uterine wall, so with this terminology, sure--birthcontrol prevents pregnancy.
HOWEVER, preventing implantation does not mean preventing the creation of a human zygote. If the first two preventative measures of birthcontrol (mucus and suppressed ovulation) do not work, then the conception of a human being/homo sapien can occur. 5 to 9 days later, that *zygote* will implant in the uterus.
If a birthcontrol fails as a contraceptive (does not prevent conception) then a human life will begin, and preventing implantation will end that human life--that is the abortifacient aspect of oral, hormonal birthcontrol (and that is one of the reasons why I have a problem with it)
If you're interested in this more...Monday 4/9, the National Geographic documentary "In the Womb: Multiples" (google it) will be showing from 7-8pm in the Student Union theatre. And even more interestingly, on 4/11 an abortion survivor (she was born alive after her mother's abortion!) will be speaking in Schenker lecture hall at 7:30pm (www.giannajessen.com). check it out! contact uconnprolife@gmail.com

FFS. A chemical abortion because the zygote isn't allowed to implant?
So, say the woman isn't on any contraception, but the zygote just doesn't implant due to the conditions in the womb not being right. Then the woman has her period. Does the woman daring to have her period = abortion?

This really is a win for the moralist side, and a seemingly big loss for any drifting or would be woodstockers.
The issue stands on its own demerits.
Obviously, money is the root of all evil!
