Questioning Slanted Equality

Abstract:
A rainbow flag waved outside the Dodd Center on Saturday afternoon. A small amount of snow was still frozen on the ground, and six protesters in heavy coats handed out flyers that said, "HRC [Human Rights Campaign]: Your vision of equality only extends as far as your nose....

It will take a very long time for the HRC to rebuild trust in the trans-community.
This is what got the us so angry with the HRC...

* In March 2000, the HRC added Gender to its Mission Statement.
* In May of this year, at the Transgender Lobbying Days in Washington DC the HRC said that they would only back a gender inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)
* In a speech at the Southern Comfort Conference on September 14, Joe Solmonese, the President of the HRC reiterated that they will only back a gender inclusive ENDA.
* The end of September after Massachusetts Representative Barney Franks introduces a non-inclusive ENDA; the HRC said that they would remain neutral on the bill. They stated that they would support neither the bill nor oppose the bill and they would not score the Representatives if they voted against the bill.
* In the beginning of November, the HRC said that they would only support the bill and oppose any amendments. They then stated that they would score the Representatives who voted against the bill.
* They had a secret poll done in October 26 and they did not make it public until November 6th just before the vote in the House.

Already in a court case in Texas, a company is using the fact the House passed a non-gender inclusive ENDA to justify the firing of a trans-woman.

"An injury to one is an injury to all."

"United ENDA coalition continues to expand, and we intend to harness the passion, grassroots activism and local, state and national organization leadership. Collectively, we are committed to working with Congress towards the ultimate goal of passing a fully-inclusive ENDA. We also are committed to working with all the organizations in the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, as the LGBT community needs the support of the entire civil rights community to make certain a fully-inclusive bill is introduced in the next Congress."

Equality Ohio invited me to create a story in the Storytelling Workshop. With eight others we shared our lives in a most intimate way. This seems to have much more significance since ENDA has been stripped.

Sorry Heather, members of Ct. TransAdvocacy and Queers Without Borders who protested outside did not and let me repeat did not go into the the panel at the Dodd Center. If I as a 40 year vetern of the Queer Struggle had gone in I must say that the police would have been called.(I have been speaking out against HRC and Barney Frank since 1999.) Instead we went to the student union and had a nice lunch and a good discussion and planning session. Only one flyer we passed out had the title of HRC and their nose which was a flyer about HRC support for some of the most nasty corporations in the US. The other 2 were a called for a boycott and a communique' from the CT. TransAdvocacy Coalition, the number one group fighting for Trans Rights in CT. I really hope our young sisters and brothers in the TBLG movement think about all of this and many other issues and not go blindly joining HRC. Take a look at our site: www.queerswithoutborders.com/wpmu. We work hard on many issues and welcome young queer voices.
