Basically, the RIAA and MPAA want to get our money. When we interfere with that goal, they fight dirty. It's similar to when electricity was introduced, and the gas companies wanted to shut it down before it cut into their profits. Believe it or not, when the recordable cassette came out the recording industry was up in arms. They felt that people would just record music from their friends' albums and not buy the album themselves. New technology forced them to adapt. Now there is more new technology. Why isn't the recording industry adapting? When it's time to railroad, start railroading. Don't sit around and complain that people aren't buying your product the way you make it. Make it the way they'll buy it. If you want the money, find a way to get people to give it to you. Don't force them to go backwards to suit you, or sue them for refusing to go backwards.

Some older recording artists are actually finding new popularity through new technology. Janis Ian is an example. People download her songs on Limewire, like them, and decide they want to buy the album. She's happy with the results of progress, and opposed to the RIAA placing restrictions on file sharing. SHE is not refusing to adapt. Modern artists seem to be unable to adapt in the same way.
