Abstract:
This weekend, the class of 2008 celebrates graduation with massive commencement ceremonies, and to commemorate their departure, the university has arranged notable speakers for the 11 schools holding ceremonies Saturday and today....
I've always had an issue with the speakers at UConn Graduations, especially more recent ones. Overall, they just lack any sort of notarity. The only person I knew from that list was Rebecca Lobo, woo. A WNBA player. Maybe Shaq will be here for next year's graduation.
I seriously think that we scrabble to get speakers in March and April and just settle. Come on, get world leaders, national leaders, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, actors, etc.
Yes, I know UConn is a liberal political activist college, so the chances of any republican from the 2000-2008 era is remote. (We did have Bush Senior come speak in the 90s).
Granted, splitting up the graduations into smaller sections will make this task harder, since there is no point for someone famous to speak to 200 AG majors, but the afternoon CLAS ceremony remains large. I mean, as a business graduate hearing some woman femenist talk about something I dont even remember was horrid, but I mean come on. I would rather have Brad Pitt come speak at my graduation then her.
