The Daily Campus

Potential of academic orgs eclipsed by student apathy

Abstract:
According to U.S. News & World Report's recent rankings, at least a couple of dozen state universities are ranked higher than UConn. It should come as a surprise because Connecticut is the richest state in the richest country in the world, which shows that the financial concerns (until recently) and dedicated faculty are not guarantees of rigorous standards....

i wouldnt go so far as to equate political activism to intelligence. Many campuses that are big into political activism lose so much contact with the outside world it is quite sad to live there because the propaganda and brainwashing are widespread (insert any small liberal arts college in the northeast).

I would rather go to a school that has vibrant intramurals, club sports, frats, etc. To paraphrase you: the clubs where "intelligence" is not needed.

Saad, I believe this article is a bit misinformed. I think if you look at the history of the groups i'm in involved in I think you'll see that we've brought many great speakers and events to campus. Idealists United has brought numerous Musical Performers(Immortal Technique, Dead Prez), Speakers (Robert King,Rick Rowly, Bill Ayers)and trainings to campus. They organized an activist training conference that was not tied to any issue or point of view, just basic strategies for organizing like how to lobby politicians, how to get the media on your side, and how to start up and run student groups. I would encrouage you to come to our meetings and see what we're all about, because i think you'd have a much more optimistic look on campus activism after only a couple hours.

I agree with what your trying to say and would honestly like to extend an offer to work together on getting more prolific speakers to campus. I had been considering hosting a indy media conference to train students about 21st century media technology and invite Amy Goodman from Democracy Now! as a keynote speaker. Anyone down to help?

And i'm sorry i'm high and I forgot to add a clarification on your comment regarding the possibility of changing campus marijuana penalties. It is absolutely possible to convince the administration to change the punishments levied by Community standards and other administrative bodies. Right now there is leeway given to those who dicate punishments for possesion. They can choose to do any combination of "Months on probabtion, Drug Tests, Drug education classes or financial penalties". We would like to see the drug tests eliminated in their entirety as they are an invasion of our right to privacy. All other punishments can also be reduced if they so choose. This is directly in the hands of the folks in Community Standards. We believe that with enough education they will see these policies only hurt the students further, and there are many more effective and more economical ways to handle drug abuse. SSDP(Student for a sensible drug policy) recently held a conference regarding CT Senate bill 349-The bill that would Decriminalize Marijuana in CT. There are many ways we can make this happen. UConn students were a big part of pushing this bill out of the judiciary and we'll be working just as hard on the campus level.

Saad,

clearly you don't really have any idea how USG works, or any student organization for that matter. Maybe you should put all that money you get paid to write garbage like this to good use, and actually do some research.
