Board of Trustees debates future of Spring Weekend

Abstract:
Numerous groups represented different views on how to improve UConn's infamous Spring Weekend at last night's hearing held by the Board of Trustees Student Life Committee. One message that was supported by all attendees, including the administrative board, was that in no way was there a motion to eliminate Spring Weekend altogether....

Ms. Cocks have you lost your marbles?

"According to Cathy Cocks of the Office of Community Standards, there is an expectation to be reckless among students and in order to end it THERE SHOULD BE A REDUCED NUMBER OF EMERGENCY PERSONNEL..." This is the WORST suggestion I have ever heard! Regardless of whether the behavior that happens during spring weekend is right or wrong, it DOES happen and it is the University's responsibility to ensure the safety of at least its students, if not everyone, present on campus that weekend. Ms. Cock's logic is unbelievable - if, for example, someone walking from one of the sober alternatives is hit by a drunk driver, the fact that there may not be enough emergency personnel to immediately respond is somehow going to change things for the better? I seriously doubt it. As a former RA and ER staff member of several years, as well as a UConn undergrad and grad student I have taken comfort throughout the years in knowing that despite the increase in unsafe behavior there is also an increase in protection. There's a lot of stupid and shady invidividuals on campus during spring weekend, and yes that should be addressed and changed, but not by increasing the risk that they pose to other students and community members.

They should just do the wristband thing. If someone doesn't have a wristband, and can't immediately point to a uconn student they are with as a guest, they should be arrested or if that's too extreme, asked to leave. I'm sick of obvious criminals walking around robbing people, attempting to steal cameras, and mugging people when they shouldn't be here. That is the only problem with Spring Weekend. A few burnt couches and rowdy behavior isn't going to kill anyone.

I'm with Jeff. It could/should be pretty simple to administer and watch over, though it might mean more staff/police to make it work.

Spring Weekend costs UConn alot of money. I say, the heck with Spring Weekend and all its attendant problems and put the money towards helping the janitorial staff keep their jobs. If students are really serious about helping these people keep their jobs then they should consider giving up a weekend of drinking.

I don't understand why the University is so concerned with tip-toeing around the Spring Weekend issue. If the economy continues to get worse, our little displays of college decadence are only going to make us look worse than we already do. Also, I am sick and tired of the administration's continual denial that UConn students are primarily responsible for the problems of Spring weekend. There is a recurring trend where people in the Dean of Students office and elsewhere like to blame all problems on "outsiders" - poppycock. If that's not a convenient response to the issue I don't know what is.
