HARTFORD - In desperate need of a win, the Huskies played their most inspired basketball of the season Wednesday night versus No. 25 Villanova. In a back and forth battle from tip to finish, the Huskies outlasted the Wildcats in coach Jim Calhoun's historic 1,000th game to get win No.
HARTFORD - Jim Calhoun has coached a lot of college basketball games. UConn's 81-76 win Wednesday over Villanova marked Calhoun's 1,000th game coached. But the buzz surrounding the Huskies and Calhoun before and after the game had nothing to do with his milestone, but rather the speculation that the UConn coach has been mentioned as a possible candidate for an NBA coaching job with the Los Angeles Lakers.
If there was a time for win, that would be now for the Huskies. After a disappointing conference loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UConn can redeem itself tonight against Rutgers. Notre Dame beat the Huskies, 65-59, last Sunday night at Gampel Pavilion.
HARTFORD - UConn coach Randy Edsall announced Wednesday the signing of 26 recruits to national letters of intent. In front of a crowd in the hundreds at the Goodwin Hotel, Edsall called the 2005 recruiting class "the best we've put together." "You never know three, four years down the road, but I'd have to say, by far, this is the best class we've put together," Edsall said.
HARTFORD - Following the Huskies triumphant slaughter of Toledo in the Motor City Bowl, reality slowly began to set in for most of the UConn faithful. That was the last time that fans would ever see Dan Orlovsky calling the signals in UConn blue and white, and it would be the last time they would see big Ryan Krug throwing pancake blocks with his veteran offensive line.

You could see it on his face. Frustration, embarrassment, fatigue. Rudy Tomjanovich resigned yesterday afternoon as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. During the press conference it was apparent the decision to do so was difficult. It was obvious by looking at his eyes as he spoke, the tone of his voice.
