Vanessa Kafka is not your typical UConn student. After all, how many typical college students have released three albums, and get the opportunity to be the opening act for one of their musical influences? Kafka is a Tolland native who has been playing guitar since the seventh grade, and wrote her first songs in 10th grade.

Renzi Teaches College 101 Using Only His 'C's

With boyish good looks and a flamboyant attitude, self-proclaimed "Real World has-been," Dan Renzi of "Real World Miami" addressed a crowd at the Student Union theatre last night. "I wanted to see somebody famous," said Chantal Thompson, a 1st-semester economics major.

As one of the biggest up and coming punk acts of recent years, Gainesville, Fla.'s Against Me! are not only coming to terms with their underground success, but embracing a new attitude as well. Mixing together melodic street punk with acoustic folk and country, Against Me! continues to bring their brand of music to the masses through constant touring and overt politics.

In Rane's 10 years together, they've seen a lot of things according to the band, but seeing Santa Claus crowd surf at their Halloween party gig at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute probably took the cake. Rane started out just like any other band, buddies in high school, playing in each other's basements, and have now blossomed into a band that plays gigs in New England and as far as Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
