I wanted to start this column as a compliment to UConn football for holding their own against No. 16 Georgia Tech last Saturday. I wanted to say that despite the loss, the Huskies should still be proud to compete with a top 20 team - something they didn't come close to doing against Miami in 2002 or Virginia Tech in 2003.
The Minnesota Vikings (0-2) No Randy Moss. No touchdown passes. No wins. The Vikings have started the 2005 football season 0-2. Coming into the season, there were high expectations for the Vikes. Many analysts felt the Vikings could overcome the loss of superstar receiver Moss and potentially be a better team than the playoff team of last year.
With three weeks in the books, there is still no clear-cut picture of what the Big East Conference is and will become. There have certainly been surprises so far, but with most teams having three games under their belt, nobody is certain how the conference season will play out.
This season, the National League has featured the three best starting pitchers in baseball. Cardinal ace Chris Carpenter, ageless wonder Roger Clemens of Houston and Florida's young lefty Dontrelle Willis are battling to take home the 2005 Cy Young Award, given annually to the league's best pitcher.
There is a lot of anticipation with the end of the baseball season coming up. Not only are both league playoff races coming down to the wire, but also the awards for MVP and the Cy Young. The NL Cy Young award is especially intriguing. Chris Carpenter, Roger Clemens and Dontrelle Willis are the three legitimate contenders, with Carpenter the early favorite.
