Spring Break
In the 1600s, Connecticut became the first state to enact "blue laws" - religiously inspired laws designed to curb perceived immoral behavior amongst the populace. Although many of these ludicrous statutes, including bans on dice games, card playing and fornication, have since been repealed, one of these bothersome laws still remains in full effect nearly 400 years later - the prohibition of alcohol sales on Sundays.
Recently, the red brick walls of our beloved, if dilapidated, Arjona building have been added to the growing list of vandalized sidewalks and edifices around campus. I have two comments. First, stop spray painting university buildings, you're making our campus ugly.
FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford announced his resignation on the night of Friday, Sept. 23, not even two weeks ago. Crawford's notice came in the wake of a brutal fight over whether or not to approve the morning-after pill for over-the-counter use. Crawford had been confirmed as FDA commissioner a mere two months earlier.
Imagine the following scenario. You're 40 years old, and someone in your family has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This person is your father, the same man who taught you how to play baseball, how to ride a bike and took you fishing on his off-weekends.
Emily Groff's excellent article, "War on Drugs Inadequate" (Sept. 29), was dead-on in its assessment of the federal government's misguided focus on marijuana. But if it is misguided to focus resources on nonviolent marijuana users, then it is downright cruel to arrest and imprison seriously ill people who use marijuana to treat medical conditions.
DC++ isn't dead, you just have to know where to look. How is it that the Pentagon, the world's largest office building, was built in 16 months and the Student Union has been undergoing construction for 30+ months? To the superficial art critic who commented about the paintings in Wilbur Cross: FYI women come in all shapes and sizes.
