Rosa Parks died on Oct. 24 at the age of 92. Parks laid in state in the Capitol's rotunda Monday, the first ever woman to lay in state and only the second African American. Her story of a woman standing up for her beliefs and peaceably making a statement about civil rights of African Americans has touched many.
Norman Garrick, an associate professor of engineering, recently returned to UConn after spending the week of Oct. 13 in Biloxi, Miss. at the Mississippi Renewal Forum (MRF). The forum was summoned by the governor of Mississippi "to recommend the best avenues of redesign and redevelopment for the state's coastal cities in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina," according to a press release.
The sounds of clinking poker chips and chatter filled the room as player registration began at 5 p.m. for the Hillel's first charity poker tournament held Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. to benefit Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross. According to Danielle Selber, tournament director and 5th-semester English major, this is the first year the tournament took place at UConn.
