French President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday and instituted a 12-day curfew after nearly two weeks of rioting in which thousands of cars have been burned, several police officers wounded and at least one man beaten to death. The civil unrest encompassing most of France's large suburbs began Oct.

Extinction may not mean forever. The Associated Foreign Press, reported on Oct. 12 that Australian scientists have resumed working on "Jurassic Park" style cloning of the extinct Tasmanian tiger after abandoning the project earlier this year. The project was originally discontinued because researchers were having a difficult time isolating quality DNA from museum collections.
Bakari Kitwana, formerly of Source magazine, came to the African American Cultural Center a couple of weeks ago to speak about his new book "Why White Kids Love Hip Hop: Wangstas, Wiggers, Wannabes, and the New Reality of Race in America." Kitwana's book tries to analyze the reasons why the white youth today likes hip hop music.
