Words were spoken, thoughts were shared and lessons were learned at the African-American Culture Center Thursday as guest poet Jennifer Smith Turner shared some of her works. Turner received a warm introduction from UConn President Philip Austin and adjunct professor Willena Kimpson Price, who had nothing but positive things to say about their friend. (0) comments

The music of Bach and Beethoven, played on a grand piano, filled the William Benton Museum of Art's main gallery Thursday. The pianist, Wen-Hui Lin, a doctoral student studying music under UConn Professor Neal Larrabee, performed several pieces at the Benton for about a dozen listeners. (0) comments

Between 40,000 and 50,000 Americans become infected with HIV every year, half of them between the ages of 13 and 24, according to amfar.com, one of the world's leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting HIV/AIDS research. This means at least two teenagers and young adults in this country are infected with HIV every hour of every day. (0) comments

UConn will sponsor a day-long Brass Festival at von der Mehden Recital Hall, Saturday. Similar to the Cello Festival held in late January, the day will include musical performances from masters of the art such as the Bala Brass and the U.S. Coast Guard Brass Quintet, as well as workshops and clinics to help high school, college and professional musicians hone their skills. The bitter cold of winter did not stop some students from checking out the free comedy show put on by the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG) at the Student Union Thursday night.
