Journey To The U.S.

A gritty determination to be with their mother is what drives some children to travel thousands of miles and come to the United States illegally, according to Sonia Nazario, who spoke at Konover Auditorium at the Dodd Center Tuesday night. Nazario won a Pulitzer Prize for her book "Enrique's Journey," a non-fiction work that details the journey of one child who traveled through Central American countries and then through Mexico to find his mother in the United States. It is a common misconception that hunger is more of a global than a local issue, but roughly 100,000 people in Connecticut suffer from food insecurity. Of these 100,000 people, 40,000 are children. Tuesday night ConnPIRG (Public Interest Research Group) held a Hunger 101 workshop in the Student Union to raise hunger awareness. (1) comment

The first Muslim woman and first Iranian to win the Nobel Peace Prize has been selected to be the commencement speaker for UConn's School of Law. Dr. Shirin Ebadi, a strong advocate for women and children's rights, is scheduled to speak on May 20 in Hartford. (0) comments
