From the first downbeat of the percussion, followed by the immediate blast of sound by the rest of the band, the UConn Jazz Lab Band set a high tone and excitement level that grew throughout last night. The 18-piece ensemble cruised their way through the rest of their opening song, "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" by Louis Armstrong, showing off the power and feel good attitude of big band music. The Long River Writers Series ended their calendar year of events Monday in CLAS room 217 to an over-capacity crowd of performers, literary enthusiasts, students and professors alike. However, for Mark Cassano, a 3rd-semester psychology major who is minoring in music, the steel drums are an outlet for both creativity and emotional exertion.
