GREENSBORO, N.C. - Two teams fighting for one spot - one a heavy favorite, the other trying to pull off an upset. On a rainy Sunday afternoon in North Carolina, it was UConn who edged out Old Dominion, 78-63, to advance to the Elite Eight. Coming into the weekend series with Big East foe Villanova, the baseball team knew it had to make a statement. The Huskies (13-11, 5-4 Big East) did just that by taking two out of three games from Villanova (8-15, 1-5) on the weekend, outscoring the Wildcats 22-11 overall behind strong hitting performances up-and-down the lineup. When Kijuan Dabney first came to Storrs by way of Houston, Texas, he didn't even own a coat. But flash-forward two years and the freshman safety is feeling much more comfortable in the northeast, both on and off the field. After the coaching staff decided not to redshirt him last season, Dabney went on to play in 12 of 13 games, mostly on special teams, and finished with five tackles. (1) comment
Elliot Glynn didn't get the win for the Huskies. He didn't even have one perfect inning on the mound. But Glynn did the one thing he had to - give the ball to the Huskies bullpen with a lead, which with the combined effort of Will Musson and David Erickson, enabled UConn to win its first Big East series of the year. Through every UConn Lacrosse (1-9, 0-3 Big East) game this season, Whitney Michele has been one of the Huskies' most consistent players and someone head coach Megan Cersosimo has come to rely on game after game. GREENSBORO, N.C. - After being denied a rubber match in the Big East tournament, it's only fitting that the Greensboro Regional will come down to UConn and Rutgers. Tina Charles and Renee Montgomery have been two of UConn's 'big three' on offense all season. So to watch them both go down with injuries about two minutes apart had to have scared coach Geno Auriemma - especially given the season-ending knee injuries to starters Kalana Greene and Mel Thomas earlier in the year.
