Thirty Students Treated For Contagious Virus

No Outbreak Reported On Campus, UConn Works To Stop Further Contamination

Thirty UConn students have been treated at UConn Health Services after contracting norovirus at a sorority formal held at The Adam's Mill, a Manchester restaurant, Saturday night. The Manchester Health Department confirmed Thursday through lab analysis that the norovirus was the cause of the student's illness, according to Rob Miller, director of Eastern Highlands Health District, which is working closely on the issue with the Manchester Health Department. Manchester Health Department Heads Investigation To Determine Cause Of Illness

The Manchester Health Department has been conducting an investigation since early Tuesday to determine what caused 30 students to fall ill after a sorority formal at The Adam's Mill, a Manchester restaurant, Saturday night. Norovirus, which is found in fecal matter of those infected and causes vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping, can be contracted by eating or drinking contaminated food or liquids, touching contaminated surfaces or objects and placing the hand in the mouth or having direct contact with an infected person, according to the Center for Disease Control's Web site. In 1973 Norma McCorvey - better known as "Jane Roe" from Roe vs. Wade" - won the landmark case that legalized abortion in the United States. Wednesday night in the Student Union theatre, she spoke out on why she now feels that decision was a mistake. Brought to UConn to speak about her experiences by the UConn Pro-Life club, McCorvey, who had spent most of her life working in abortion clinics and championing a woman's right to choose, was clear that she felt she had made a mistake and was now a changed woman. New Shuttle To Hartford Offered

UTS Bus $50 For One-Way, $100 For Round-trip

A new shuttle service to Union Station in Hartford is being offered for students, faculty and staff on campus. The program is being offered by the UConn Transportation Services, according to Janet Freniere, transportation services administrator. Students may take advantage of the services at any time throughout the year. (0) comments

Acts concerning the reappropriation of funds, membership while studying abroad and a statement of position regarding an on-campus polling station were passed at Wednesday night's USG meeting. An act was passed to reapportion funds so that money from the unemployment account was moved to the unappropriated surplus, according to the legislature. (0) comments

An investigation by both state and local health inspectors has been launched following an outbreak of food-borne illness among several UConn students. The investigation centers around a Manchester restaurant at which the students held an event Saturday, according to Karen Grava, UConn director of media communications. (6) comments
