UConn reacts to assault

Students, administrators believe that campus is safe, even after attack

In the wake of the violent act, UConn police have stepped up night security on campus and its perimeter areas and assigned a special taskforce to investigate the case. So far, no arrests have been made. As the investigation continues, UConn students react with shock and alarm to news of the attack, which many say has caused them to think twice before going out after dark. (0) comments

The USG elections wrapped up Thursday with 1,545 students turning out to vote. All positions were filled except for that of South senator, which ended in a tie. Students also overwhelmingly approved changes to the USG constitution. In the race for the freshman class senator, one of the most hotly contested positions, Patrick Notti won by a margin of 108 votes over Doug Murphy. (1) comment

With an assault occurring last weekend and the nights gradually getting darker sooner, many students are getting worried about staying safe on campus. "I think the idea of an assault happening on campus is really scary since it feels like we're in a safe little area, but it's actually just as dangerous as anywhere else," said Colleen O'Day, a 1st-semester business major. Some students opt for off-campus housing as a means to save money. Those willing to share bedrooms often find that living off-campus can be cheaper than living in Hilltop or Charter Oak apartments. But students who want freedom and privacy are finding that paying rent for your own bedroom in an off-campus apartment isn't as cheap as it once was. (0) comments
