Hogan's report card: One year in review

Exposure: B+ President Hogan has made a strong effort to reach out to the student body. On Spring Weekend, he walked around encouraging students to behave responsibly. At football games he is greeted like a celebrity, with students often chanting his name and asking for photos. (1) comment

Editorial: One year later, Hogan still strong

It has been a year since Michael Hogan became UConn's 14th president. In this time, the university has experienced a lot of negative attention - it dropped out of U.S. News and World Report's list of the top 25 public universities, two sexual assaults were reported and it experienced a major budget cut. I have to give the McCain campaign credit. They're very clever. On Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate John McCain stated he would not attend today's scheduled presidential debate unless the economic crisis was solved. In saying this, he probably convinced a lot of Americans that he cared more about the economy than his campaign. (1) comment

For anyone reading sports news over the last several weeks, the closing of New York's Yankee Stadium after 85 historic baseball seasons is a familiar topic. Fans are constantly reading about all the ways in which the new Yankee Stadium (which is being constructed right across the street from the original) will be improved over the one on 161st Street. I was very disappointed when the power went out today and I did not receive a UConn Alert text message telling me what was happening. I can't believe the Instant Daily hasn't abused the Longboarding kids yet. First Dumbledore, now Clay Aiken. Who's next, Tom Cruise? Today I saw a kid wearing a running shirt trip and fall. DC Columnists debate on-campus vs. off-campus housing

For on-campus housing: Matt Stevens • On-campus housing is better economically. It is expensive to pay for gas to commute to campus. • The ResLife staff is there to assist you in case of an emergency. Given the recent crime on campus, this is a good thing. (1) comment

I was honored to give a talk on "Misconceptions about Islam" at the Muslim Student Association's Ramadan Awareness Dinner and Fast-a-Thon at UConn. Many professors and students expressed to me their appreciation for both the topics covered in my lecture and my manner of delivery. (6) comments

The Sept. 23 editorial, "Going trayless won't solve bigger problems" was both disappointing and misinformed. From the very first line in the editorial, which referenced going trayless as being the "single solution introduced for lessening waste at UConn," the author clearly demonstrated that he hadn't done his research before committing his personal opinions to paper as facts.
