Editorial: Student-faculty ratio important for rankings

UConn was conspicuously absent from the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings of the Top-25 public universities in the country.UConn responded to that drop with a five-year academic plan issued by UConn leaders last week. The plan, which seeks to put UConn in the Top-20 public universities nationwide in five years, contains many provisions, including raising the average SAT scores of incoming freshmen, doubling the number of students in the Honors program, and increasing the number of students who participate in study abroad programs. Standardized tests, although cumbersome, have been a part of the Connecticut education experience since the Connecticut Mastery Test in fourth grade. With high school comes ACTs or SATs - and all the planning and stress attached to them. According to some of the most prominent college admissions officials, the SATs and ACTs may now become optional in many schools. (0) comments

Change is inevitable, and there is no better example of this than UConn. With over $5 billion given to the university to make improvements, students here are used to witnessing buildings go up and come down, get face lifts or boast new amenities. Despite all of the renovations done here on campus, some students are left wondering what the administration was thinking when they decided on certain changes. (4) comments

When Beavers and Trojans play together, everyone wins. If you and I were squirrels, could I bust a nut in your hole? A girl got bonus points in class for telling the joke, "What is the opposite of Christopher Reeve? Christopher Walken." To the jerk who put broken signs on the washers during free laundry week so he didn't have to wait in line: It probably wasn't a good idea to take your signs down and put your laundry in while there were 20 people in the room.
