Spirit rock: Great gesture, but unfortunate eyesore

The Alumni Association recently put a large rock in front of the UConn Foundation building that is meant to serve as a "spirit rock." That is, it is supposed to be decorated by various campus organizations who want to display their colors, mottos or letters in a prominent place for all to see. (6) comments

Last week there was a story in the news about Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) banning an accident victim from volunteering at their events because her disfigured appearance was too offensive. A 16-year-old drunk driver hit Rose Harn 20 years ago and now she is left brain damaged and paralyzed. (2) comments

Back in February, after defaults in sub-prime mortgage had triggered a credit crisis causing global banks to write down $80 billion in credit market losses over a period of only four months, very few seemed to notice that Islamic financial institutions worldwide were somehow untouched by that disaster in the making. I finally did it. I stole one of those stupid signs in the middle of the crosswalk. Words of wisdom: The whole thing doesn't fit in a compact car trunk unless you twist the top part off. If there's not enough time, you can kind of fit it across the backseat. (5) comments
