Visiting writer shares details of awkward adolescence

The reception was warm for Aetna Writer-in-Residence Steve Almond last night in the Konover Auditorium. Reading mostly from his newest book, "Not that You Asked," while providing contextual embellishments via unscripted asides to the crowd, Almond offered brief glimpses of his life and perspective in crisp detail. Slam poets shocking, comical

They weren't part of a comedy series, they weren't a headlining Family Weekend event and in fact most of the audience had probably never heard of Death From Below before Wednesday night. So what were these guys all about, anyway? "There's two things we're known for," spit the slam poetry duo on the stage of the Student Union Theatre. (0) comments

The leaves are changing colors, the temperature is falling, the wind chill is picking up, Hunting Lodge Road is no longer as jam-packed Thursday through Saturday nights as it was at the start of the semester. So where are people going when it gets too cold to make the hike to Carriage or Celeron? The answer: the bars. (0) comments

Trends and fads come and go, but scarves have withstood the test of time - and the seasons - and are here to stay. In the warmer weather, scarves tend to be made out of lightweight materials such as silk, satin or chiffon whereas cotton and cashmere scarves are commonly paired with a winter coat. (0) comments

Bringing the blue blur back to impressive form

BioWare makes Sonic the Hedgehog relevant again in 'Dark Brotherhood'

The Blue Blur is back ladies and gentlemen, and not in a manner you may not recognize. Developer BioWare is responsible for some of the most innovative and addictive Role Playing Games (RPGs) out there like "Knights of the Old Republic," "Jade Empire" and "Mass Effect. (0) comments

The little hedgehog that could has come a long way in the past 17 years. Beginning as a simple platforming game with an edge, Sonic turned from video game mascot to pop culture icon of the '90s. He has gone from the cartridge to the TV screens and even the comic book pages "Sonic the Hedgehog" is the longest running comic book based on a video game character). (0) comments

REVIEW: Rise Against finds mass 'Appeal'

3 and a half out of 5 stars

In 2006, Chicago-based Rise Against released their second studio album, "The Sufferer and the Witness," and finally got the recognition and success they deserved, but from the wrong audience. The politically charged rock group was taken in by teenagers filled with angst and anger, toured with My Chemical Romance and somehow found their way onto the Vans' Warped Tour, and instead of getting a message out, they were dismissed along with the boys that like tight pants and the devil wears make-up. Oasis? That band with the brothers, they're still around? Didn't they have that one song - "Wonder..." something or other - and then fell off? Just kidding people. If there were a central theme for Oasis' new album, it would be "the bigger, the better." The Manchester, England, natives has gone all out for their seventh studio album and created a sound bigger than anything they've done before. (0) comments

REVIEW: Senses 'Fail' to impress

2 and a half out of 5 stars

If parent-loathing teenage angst had a soundtrack, Senses Fail's new album "Life is Not a Waiting Room" would be it. Sticking to the pop-punk sound that they are known for, this album has a certain "I hate my dad" theme and sound perfect for any grounded teenager. (4) comments

I've never liked Lil Wayne in the past - he was too hyped, too odd or just too choppy in his rhyming - so when one of the most anticipated albums in hip-hop history, "Tha Carter III," was released over the summer, I paid little mind. And when it went on to sell over a million copies in its first week (something an album hasn't done since 50 Cent's "The Massacre"), I continued to turn my nose. (12) comments
